Last Few Days At Home

July 2, 2009

The house closed last Friday evening. And so we cleared our final hurdle between Greenville and Guatemala. Since we are now officially homeless, the boys and I have been doing a bit of travel and visiting. Mother is still trying to pack as much as possible into the 400 lbs we are allowed to take. I think my introduction of more than 20 books at the last possible moment is proving an extra challenge. It’s good I’m far away.

We already miss folks and are living between great expectation for Guatemala and disappointment at having to leave so many friends. Mother’s Spanish study is remarkable. Mine leaves a bit more to be desired at present. Watching the boys process the whole experience has been interesting.

Countdown until departure on Tuesday. 5 days.

Initial Post

June 3, 2009

On July 7, we are moving to Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. And for all those folks who’ve been asking, yes I’m still planning to take the boys. The SC Department of Social Services has a no refunds / no exchange policy on adopted children, so it appears they’ll be going with me.

At first, we’ll be working hard on learning Spanish. And I’ll be teaching middle school at the Inter American School of Xela. IAS is a Christian and English immersion school for Guatemalan children from the professional classes. While community development is my greatest interest and passion, the first year will be taken up with these other responsibilities.

I’ll be heading down to Guatemala next week to secure a place to live, basic furniture and appliances, and scout out the area. After that, I can post photos and more information about what we’ll be doing.
